This post comes to you from Day 3 of Shark Week. I've been meaning to make a post on rest for a while and today served up the perfect biological reminder, so...here we go. Rest: It's importance and how to #flipthescript on feeling guilty for wanting/needing/taking it. It's no secret that in western culture, we place massive value on extreme output and the ability to be super human while working off as little rest as humanly possible. Coffee is just one example of a commonplace substance that many people leverage (ok, rely on) to bypass biology in order to keep up with cultural expectations. (Side note: how messed up is that when u really think about it??) We wear rest deprivation and constant output like a badge of honor while we drown in shame, anxiety and guilt for even considering slowing down long enough to allow our minds, bodies and emotions to renew and recharge. The thing about rest is... It's gonna happen. One way or another. We can't outrun it. Its a matter of: a) choosing to embrace rest and implement it on our own terms or b) choosing to deny it and in turn, suffer the inevitable consequences of full-blown time outs that you KNOW are gonna show up in the most inconvenient of ways and take longer to come back from Flipping the Script on rest guilt is where the magic happens... Embracing rest - even planning for it - is to embrace the infinite wisdom that is inherent in our design. We're cyclical beings living in a cyclical universe; what goes around ALWAYS comes around; what goes up, ALWAYS comes down....(you know, so it can go back up again ) Output and Rest are inextricably connected. One cannot exist without the other. Choosing to embrace rest when that inner nudge calls for it from time to time is to respect a design far more intelligent than any societal conditioning we've absorbed. Choosing to embrace rest is an investment in our ability to create high powered output, long term. Choosing to embrace rest is an empowering act of self-respect and self love. In the end, our biology will always win.
Listening to what it's is calling for, instead of denying it, is what gives us an edge!!
P.S. - I'm writing this from bed, with a heat pad on my back and a cup of tea next to me. I've swapped out a strength workout for a mobility one today and I've already said 'No' to 3 incoming requests for my time/energy. I've learned the hard way too many times that I will ALWAYS pay a price if I deny myself the rest I need, when I need it. Instead of feeling guilt, shame or anxiety about taking things down a notch today, I feel like a muther effn badass and I'm throwing one of these up at those old, limiting 'rest guilt' scripts (and whoever put them there in the first place ).
So...here's to resting when we need to....cuz it's what we're designed to do. And it's how we'll keep coming back stronger, faster and more powerfully. #BOOYAH
